Walnut Wood Flooring

Take a look astatine several dissimilar types of wood flooring, and inevitably one of the darkest of the woods will catch the eye. Walnut flooring is on the darker end of the woods and provides a deep natural chromaticity to the floor of any house. It has several properties that make it great if a householder or homebuilder is considering a more “Americana” feel to the floor.

Walnut has been valued for several centuries going beyond its use as a floor material. The wood itself is hard, dense and known for a high polish. It’s color ranges from the creamy white of the sapwood to the dark brown of the heartwood. Its rich color has been prized non only for floors but for furniture, bowls, and even for rifle stocks and musical instruments. It is no surprise, then, that people want this wood for their floors.

Walnut floor is easy to work with. It is excellent when it comes to sawing and finishing, and fair when it comes to nailing. It is a dense material, though it is about a fifth softer than Northern red oak. Prices can range from $4-$8 per square foot but typically ar on the more expensive end of that scale. Because of that you may wish to buy a sample of the wood. Samples can be bought for typically $10 online. While this may seem high for something that is a sample, it’s a lot better than having to put out $960 or more for a room.

Wood floors are not exempt from daily spill and stain, and care should be taken to preserve and clean on a regular basis. Failure to do so, or improper care, may damage and age the floor or, worse, void any warranty you have on the walnut flooring. Several tips may look obvious. For instance, on any hard flooring having protective pads underneath furniture seems a no-brainer. Some tips, however, do not appear so obvious, such as keeping high heel place in good repair and keeping your pets nails well trimmed. Those things will extend the life of your walnut floor and prevent costly repairs down the line.

The positives of walnut as a floor material are significant, but so are the costs and the maintenance. But homeowners who ar willing to put in the time and effort will be rewarded with a dark, rich, beautiful floor that gives a home a traditional, comforting feel.
